It’s raining when Sherlock comes back to 221B. He drips water all over the old ragged carpet John has kept after 1,094 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes of being alone. Sherlock’s heart cracks just a little bit more at the thought.

“John”

He expects surprise. He expects hysterics, perhaps even a fainting spell or a punch in the face.

But John just breezes past him, eyes set forward and pointedly away from Sherlock.

A minute later, the scream of the teakettle rings out.

Sherlock takes a seat on the couch and waits.
